‘Some distance from Fort Benton a Mr. Steed, who had been engaged in a fishery business in Sarni, Ontario joined us and was a welcome addition to our party. The more company there was, the less monotony on this long three hundred mile stretch. He had a splendid team of big dapple grey Percheron mares, something new in the country. He was headed for Fort Macleod, which was three hundred miles north of Fort Benton.’
