Submission to the Board of Transport Commissioners on the Subject of Increase in Livestock Freight Rates
(Presented at Calgary, Monday, November 20th, 1950, by Western Section, National Council of Canadian Beef Producers and the Western Stock Growers’ Association)
‘In June, 1949, in Calgary it was our privilege to present our views to the Royal Commission on Transportation on conditions in the Beef Cattle Industry we represent and on freight rates in particular.
We pointed out that Alberta and Saskatchewan were surplus cattle producing areas and that is was necessary to move a heavy surplus each year, mostly by railway freight, long distances to Eastern Canada, United States and British Columbia markets. We also stated that the industry was one which was subject to wide price variations and because of weather elements over which producers could exercise little or no control, it was subject to great fluctuations in costs.’
