‘I have been living most of this month with my old friends, the sergeants of the police, which costs me nothing. We had a most enjoyable Christmas and New Year’s. A grand ball was given by the police on the latter day which was attended by the whole neighborhood, and quite a number of white ladies graced the ball.

We had a rather severe winter here; had a bad trip from Walsh to this place and the weather has been severe ever since, though occasionally those extraordinary warm winds come through the mountains and melt off the snow – one of the great advantages of this district for cattle. At Calgary a good many cattle have died.’
