Fed cattle prices seen higher on sustained demand

The Markets with Deb McMillin, from the December 2019 issue of Canadian Cattlemen

Fed cattle The last two weeks have seen fed cattle prices pushed higher by continued demand, the re-opened border, higher cut-out values and reduced supplies. Seasonally, fed prices are responding to demand for middle meats as buyers look towards their holiday needs in the coming month. At the same time, China announced that it has […] Read more

Former Alberta rancher delivers high-tech ranch management

Cannon Smith finds there is life after ranching by developing software for the industry

In 2008, Cannon Smith had a big decision to make. Like many cattle producers at the time, the lifelong southern Alberta rancher was being rocked by the lingering price effects of BSE. His hog operation was also in jeopardy from free-falling pork prices. Smith had two choices: either exit livestock production altogether or embrace a […] Read more

The cancellation, announced Monday, indefinitely prolongs what was already described as “critical processing capacity shortage” for the province’s cattle producers, leaving […] Read more

University of Alberta researchers have flagged 19 genes that may play a role in feed efficiency.

Cattle researchers map feed-efficiency genes

Research: News Roundup from the November 2019 issue of Canadian Cattlemen

After sifting through thousands of genes, researchers have flagged a handful of genes that seem to be related to feed efficiency in cattle. Hui-Zeng Sun, a post-doctoral student at the University of Alberta, used functional genomics and computational statistics to better understand feed efficiency, writes Justin Dupuis on the U of A’s research blog, folio. Poor feedlot margins are limiting feedlots’ willingness to pay, but significantly lower feed costs are expected to support calf prices this fall.

Beef Watch: Canadian cattle inventories continue to decline on strong beef demand

Prepared by the staff of Canfax and Canfax Research Services, divisions of the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association

Canadian cattle inventories continued to decline in 2019 with strong beef demand supporting cattle marketings. A pork shortage in China due to African swine fever has sent all meat prices to record highs in that country and resulted in strong demand for protein imports. As the virus is sweeping through Asia, production losses are expected […] Read more

Research on the Record with Reynold Bergen

Cattle breeders are often cautioned to avoid selecting too heavily for a single trait. Avoiding extremes is the obvious reason; selecting for small frame size in the 1950s accidentally resulted in a dwarfism problem in a few breeds. Another reason is that a lot of traits are genetically correlated, meaning that selecting for one trait […] Read more
